# First Settings to Adjust in Reaper 7

Most of the defaults are good enough to start with.
Here are some of the most obvious things you might want to change.

+ Show/Hide Transport: View menu.
+ Show/Hide Mixer: View menu, or C-m.
+ Float Mixer: right click and undock.

* To create tracks, double click empty TCP area.
    * By default, for unarmed tracks, input and monitoring mode are hidden.
        This can be changed in the theme adjuster.

+ Screensets/Layouts: View menu.
    * Layouts: A B or C.
        * B shows everything by default

+ Project Settings: various options
    * e.g. default timebase
    * Save default settings
    * Media:
        * Default format for recordings and render.
        * Path to save media files (e.g. `Media`)
    * On import: copy/don't copy/global pref
        * **Prefs→Media→Import Copy** now on by default, but uses more hard drive space.

+ Saving:
    * Create New Folder
    * Copy/Move media to project

+ Preferences:
    + Project:
        * Use project file as template
        * Prompt to save on new project
        + Backups: preserve old versions, auto backup, etc
            * Save to Backups folder
            * Limit to most recent copies or recent days
            * Auto save
            * Auto save to different directory for auto backups

+ Project - Track/Send Defaults:
    * Default track volume gain
    * Record Arm by defualt
    * Default record config (e.g. Midi by default)
        * Auto record arm
    * Item Fade Defaults
    + Item Loop Defaults: Loop source or not, does auto punch create loops

+ Actions:
    * Search for 'scroll' to change default scroll behaviour
    * Search for 'zoom'
    * Note Midi CC Relative/Mousewheel options
    * Create custom action:
        1. Zoom horizontal (mousewheel)
        1. Modify MIDI CC/mousewheel
