Finding a Needle in a Haystack
Suppose you have one synth, say Spire, and you've acquired a few preset packs, so that you have a total of 2000 presets, including 300 basses, 500 leads, and 200 pads. From this, how do you find the right preset for a track you are making? How long does this search take? And how much does this preset-hunt distract you from the actual creative flow of creating your track?
If, on the other hand, you are fluent in making patches, and only use presets as shortcuts that you then refine into the sound you want, with practice this process can be far faster than manually trawling through preset after preset trying to find the sound you want. Moreover, if you understand how to make sounds, the benefits are twofold: if you hear a sound in your head, you can choose the right synth, and the right settings, to make that sound; if your brain is trained in the intricacies of synth programming, then you can think in terms of this, which improves your ability to recognise the features of sounds and how they are made.
