Teaching Creativity (or Not)

I've often heard it said: You can't teach creativity!. Now I don't disagree. But that soundbite oversimplifies things massively. Now:

  1. Many things can get in the way of creativity, and it is possible to systematically remove many of those impediments.
  2. Many aspects of producing music, while benefiting from creativity, don't require it.
  3. Making the technical aspects of composition, arranging, and production in general, well-drilled enough to be automatic, frees the mind to explore more creative aspects.

It is similar to a degree with mathematics: you may be very talented, intellectually, and yet if you haven't drilled the basics, that creativity will only get you so far. Thus part of the approach I want to explain is one of deliberately practising those things which can be systematically practised, and to refine workflow so that as little as possible gets in the way of one's creative flow. The ultimate aim is to be able to imagine a tune, or a sound, and automatically know how to make it, just as an experienced pianist can recall the notes in a scale without much effort.
