The Role of Systematic Study

For all of us, some things come naturally, and some things don't. In the case of some things that do come naturally, it can still be said that some approaches or aspects come naturally, and some don't. What can we do about those things that don't come naturally? That is where I am an advocate of developing a systematic technique to at least teach reasonable competence. Now drilling something until you know it backwards may still leave you well short of some creative genius who picked it up in an afternoon. But the real battles in life are with ourselves: struggling to be better tomorrow than you were today. Sometimes it helps to compare with others, sometimes not. But the real comparison is between how you are today compared to how you were in the past. The aim and aspiration is, at least on average, to either keep getting better, or to get to a standard where we can be content.
