Customisation

Ad Hoc Bindings

A random thing that occurred to me today, something which is obvious in hindsight, is this. You can save and reload your keyboard shortcuts. For a given task, you will use very few of the shortcuts assigned to unmodified keys (e.g, z,x,c,a,s,d to get 6). If you save your shortcuts, then assign the common things for a given task to these keys, then restore when you're done, it can lead to a boost in productivity. The usual thing is that you occasionally modify your bindings, toolbars, and so on, and try to craft a one-size-fits-all set of bindings and toolbars. The alternative is the opposite: quickly customise to the task in hand, possibly save the result, then revert to normal. (e.g, today at one point I had x bound to 'set all selected tracks to one random color', and then reassigned it to 'move tracks to new folder' and then restored the original config.) This saves the kind of alt-control-shift-w contortions that happen when you try to have all keybindings available all the time. You don't need to remember them, since when you're done, Reaper forgets, and so do you. You then make some new bindings afresh for common things next time you have a task with repetitive actions.
